I'm sorry: I should have specified in the SPECIFIC places/zines/places I hung out with.
I'm still pissed that nobody in Trek fandom ever told me about slash, too, btw.
And there was a meaning of fan fiction as original stories by fans in fanzines as opposed to the stories set in other creators' universes: so yes.
Reality always more complex than how we can talk about it.
But it's good to remember there are LOTS of fan spaces which are not concerned with production of fan fiction, art, or vids!
